55 years ago, Herbie Hancock recorded his first album “Takin’ Off” under his own name. For his debut, which was released by the label Blue Note he didn’t simply put together an outstanding band (with Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Butch Warren and Bill Higgins), but also composed a number of terrific tunes. “Watermelon Man” was his first veritable hit. It was the beginning of a stratospheric career of one of the greatest music innovators of all time. Among others, the splendid West African guitarist Lionel Loueke forms part of Hancock’s current band.
