Midnight Sun
Dee Dee Bridgewater has proved many times that she doesn’t need to fear comparison with the the world’s best jazz vocalists – for instance in her homage to Ella Fitzgerald. Now Dee Dee Bridgewater pays tribute to Fitzgerald’s antipode Billie Holiday. Through a nuance in her tone of voice, Holiday managed to get across a maximum of emotional immediacy. The clarinet player Tony Scott once said: «When Ella sings ‘My man he’s left me,’ you think the guy went down the street for a loaf of bread. But when Billie sings, you can see that guy going down the street. He’s got his bags packed and he ain’t never coming back.»
