Despite a short and often tragic life, struggling with addiction, Billie Holiday (1915–1959) left a grand oeuvre behind that is without equal. Billie Holiday was an exceptionally gifted jazz vocalist who managed to make the maximum emotional impact with minimal means – her vocal range was less than two octaves. While at the start of the career she recorded more light-footed swing-style music, her later work often features opulent string arrangements. Daniel Schnyder has studied Billie Holiday's work extensively and now presents his own take on her music: without vocals, but with strings.
